  • A Slothful Loves to sleep
    Proverbs 15:19
“The way of the sluggard is blocked with thorns, but the path of the upright is a highway.”

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.Hope it does make some sense to you all to look at the scripture carefully and know when it talks of certain things like sluggishness. It may not look to be as important or interesting to ponder but the book of proverbs is full of substance which we do require in our day to day life as well as in our spiritual journey.Today lets see one more characteristic of a sluggish person.

Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger(Proverbs19:l5 ). How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?(Proverbs6: 9 ).

When we read the above two proverbs we know that slothfulness induces sleep and secondly an idle person loves to sleep. It is hard for him to arise from his sleep. Sleep was Gods idea to aid the human body to rest after a day’s toil. But people who sleep more than the recommended eight hours of sleep do not like to labour at all. Obviously, no hardship renders misery and want.

It also applies to our spiritual walk. The spiritual sleep refers to the spiritual dullness or lack of watchfulness. It may be also called as the spirit of deep sleep as stated in Isaiah29:10. Jesus always told his disciples to be alert and awake spiritually (Mark 13:33 to 37).

As we read these Verses it clearly mentions about the return of Christ which is told by Jesus himself. Jesus tells them in the parable form saying that the master of the house has gone out on a journey leaving his servants in charge. The master has set tasks to each one of them. No one knows when the master would come as he never told them about it. Hence it is important for the servants to be always alert and be prepared of their master’s return. Jesus tells them that the master would not appreciate them if he finds them asleep or unprepared. In the same way, a believer should be diligent in doing the work of the Lord with a watchful spirit. Jesus would appreciate those who would wait for his return diligently without being slothful.

The parable of ten virgins teaches how watchful and awake a believer must be. Mathew chapter twenty-five verses one to thirteen explains about five wise virgins who went with their lamps with extra oil to meet the bridegroom. But the foolish virgins took only their lamps and no extra oil. When we read verse five it says that the coming of the bridegroom got delayed and so all the ten Virgins fell asleep. Note that it was not night time that they fell asleep or out of tiredness. It is the wait time that put them to sleep. But the bridegroom shows up at midnight and hearing the shout they all wake up and only the wise virgin meet the bridegroom where as the foolish virgins go back to buy oil for their lamps. They don’t make up their way to the wedding feast as it was too late and the doors get closed for them. The spiritual dullness can be seen in those foolish virgins. Jesus tells us to be alert and awake with preparedness for his coming. The foolish virgins journey is like the spiritual journey of a believer without a goal. When there is no goal we would lose track of our journey.

This is what Paul explains in Romans 13 :11-14. He tells the believers to wake up from their slumber or spiritual dullness. Telling them that the hour for the end of the world is very nearer. We can no longer stay in the darkness doing all that satisfies our flesh but to put on the armour of light and cloth oneself with Jesus christ our righteousness. Our spiritual eye must be awake at all times with an expectation of the coming of the Messiah and doing all things in fulfilling what our lord intended us to do without any slothfulness. So let us all be watchful in our spirit and prepare ourselves with diligence and be wise to show up to God one day(2 Timothy 2:15). God bless you all.
